You have been meaning to re-grout your tile for months now, but the idea of removing all of that old grout is just too daunting. Surely there must be an easier way? Can you just put new grout on top of old grout?
The short answer is yes, you can put new grout on top of old grout. However, there are a few things you should know before taking this approach.
1. You Need a Grout Removal Tool
Use the grout removal tool to strike out old grout, making sure the depth is at least 2 millimeters. This is about the thickness of two dimes stacked one on top of the other. Once you have removed all of the old grout, make sure to cleanse thoroughly so there will be no dust or debris that interferes with new grout application.
2. The New Grout Will Not Adhere As Well To The Old Grout
This means that it is more likely to crack or chip over time. If your old grout is in decent shape, this may not be a big deal. However, if it is already cracked or crumbling, you are better off starting from scratch.
3. You Will Need To Use A Different Type Of Grout Than What Was Originally Used
